WaterOne is proud to announce that it has been honored with the Sustainable Water Utility Management Award by the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies (AMWA).

This award recognizes utilities that have made a commitment to sustainable management that reflects a triple bottom line approach. The award signifies that WaterOne has achieved a balance of innovative and successful efforts in areas of economic, social, and environmental endeavors, such as responsible management of resources, protection of public health, meeting responsibilities to the community, and providing cost effective services to ratepayers.

“This award was an opportunity to take inventory and document a lot of the great things we have been working on recently,” said WaterOne General Manager Mike Armstrong. “One of the areas we have been focused on for several years is energy management.”

WaterOne’s application highlighted its strong financial performance exemplified by its AAA bond rating and stabilizing conservative fiscal practices, policies, and planning. This includes a 40-year Master Plan, robust operating and rate stabilization reserves, and smoothed rate adjustments reflecting both affordability and the true cost of water. WaterOne has been helping to shape water policy and resource management as a leader behind efforts like the state’s 50-year Vision for Water Sustainability, the Kansas River Water Assurance District, the Missouri River Recovery Implementation Committee, regional advisory committees, Water Research Foundation studies, studying Missouri River bed degradation, and mitigating Harmful Algal Blooms as a founding member of the Milford Lake Regional Conservation Partnership Program.

The award also recognized WaterOne for its investment in forward-looking facilities, including its state-of-the-art water quality laboratory and Wolcott Treatment Plant as well as its Ozone treatment facility (which is currently under construction), Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), and a future hydropower plant on the Kansas River. Sustainable operations strategies include plant and facility design, technology choices, asset management, fleet improvements, green cleaning products, recycling, and watermain replacements coordinated with city street improvements. WaterOne also cultivates an award-winning communication and outreach program including its pro-tap initiative – I Love Tap – and website ILoveTap.org.

Of greatest significance, its customers are satisfied in the work WaterOne is doing. WaterOne is proud to maintain an overall customer satisfaction rating above 90%.

WaterOne joins fourteen other public water utilities in receiving the recognition in 2019, including the cities of Phoenix and San Antonio. WaterOne previously earned the AMWA Gold Award for Exceptional Utility Performance and the Platinum Award for Utility Excellence.

The award was presented to WaterOne General Manager Mike Armstrong and Director of Customer Relations Mandy Cawby at the AMWA Executive Management Conference on October 21st, 2019. AMWA is an organization of the largest publicly owned drinking water systems in the United States. AMWA’s membership serves more than 156 million people – from Alaska to Puerto Rico – with safe drinking water.

“AMWA awards spotlight the exceptional advances of public drinking water utilities that lead the nation toward sustainability through innovative management practices, executive leadership and employee commitment,” said AMWA President Steve Schneider, General Manager of Saint Paul Regional Water Services. “Communities that rely on AMWA’s 2019 award winning utilities for safe, clean drinking water can also take pride in their outstanding utility management performance.”
