City of Shawnee Achieves an ISO Class 1 Rating

Post Date:06/04/2019 11:47 AM

Chief John Mattox and the Shawnee Fire Department are proud to announce the City of Shawnee has completed its Public Protection Classification (PPC) evaluation by Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO). Effective August 1, 2019, the City of Shawnee will have a PPC of Class 1. Shawnee has improved from a rating of Class 2 from their 2016 evaluation.

"We are extremely proud of this joint effort between the City of Shawnee Fire Department, Johnson County Emergency Management & Communications, and WaterOne. This rating places Shawnee in the top 1% of all fire departments in the United States for ISO rating. Shawnee is now one of only seven communities in the entire State of Kansas with an ISO Classification of 1," said Fire Chief John Mattox.

"I am proud of our staff's commitment to providing an outstanding level of service. We are privileged to serve the community and the Shawnee Fire Department," said Ellen Wernicke, Director of Johnson County Emergency Management & Communications.

ISO's PPC Program plays an important role in the underwriting process at insurance companies. In fact, most U.S. insurers - including the largest ones - use PPC information when deciding which businesses to cover, how much coverage to offer, and/or what prices to charge for personal or commercial property insurance.

"At WaterOne, one of our core functions is providing access to a safe, reliable water supply for fire protection, at no public cost to taxpayers," said WaterOne General Manager Mike Armstrong. "As part of our commitment to supporting firefighting capabilities, WaterOne is currently constructing a new elevated storage tank on Johnson Drive to ensure pressure and availability throughout Shawnee. We are pleased to play a role in Shawnee's accomplishment."

"Another proud moment in Shawnee today as we achieved an ISO 1 rating! Only 77 fire departments in the United States are accredited and have an ISO Class 1 rating," said Mayor Michelle Distler.
