Project Description
A 7,000 square foot building was constructed to house three 2,500 kilowatt (kW) natural gas engine generators, electrical switchgear, and control systems. Sitework includes asphalt access drives and the installation of natural gas service. The project is located at the Wolcott Water Treatment Plant in Kansas City, Kansas. Each of the three new 3,448 horsepower (hp) Caterpillar model G3520H, 4-cycle lean burn natural gas-fired engine generators were fitted with a catalytic oxidizer to control emissions. Work began in July 2015 and was completed in October 2016.
The purpose of the project was to provide a reliable and redundant source of power for the plant and the nearby Horizontal Collector Well which supplies source water, in order to enhance WaterOne's ability to deliver fresh water to customers in the event of an electrical service outage. The generators are capable of meeting all electrical loads for an indefinite period should service be interrupted. The Water Treatment Plant was designed for the future installation of engine generators, but the need for back-up power became more immediate with the plant producing 30 million gallons per day of treated water ahead of usage projections. This project was done in association with Black and Veatch and Crossland Heavy Contractors.
