The Adventures of Hydroforce                                       Top

WaterOne offers The Adventures of the Hydorforce magic show to celebrate Earth Day and National Drinking Water Week each year. This show educates students, in a fun and exciting way, about water conservation, the water cycle, and how students and their families can conserve water inside and outside their home.

The program is available to approximately seven schools each year during the peak Earth Week and National Drinking Water Week promotion. These programs have been extremely well received throughout the District.  To-date, this free program has been presented in 59 local elementary schools within the District.

The Adventures of the Hydroforce program involves the students in many of the magic tricks and illusions, making water appear and disappear.  All teachers and students who attend receive activity books and other prizes to make the fun last for days.

Our conservation staff is available throughout the school year to perform a modified version of the The Adventures of the Hydorforce magic show for schools not able to participate in April.

Each show is 30 minutes long and two shows separated by a 30 minute break are possible at each participating school.  Schools interested in participating in our Earth Day Celebration, or who would like the show at some other time during the year, may contact the Conservation Services Department at (913) 895 -5761.

Other programs available include topics covering general water information, the water treatment process, water quality, and the McGruff safety program.  Additionally, the District has a high quality ten-minute video on general water usage, the water treatment and distribution process, and water quality that may be checked out as part of a school program presented by WaterOne staff.  Schools interested in scheduling something in this area should call (913) 895-5761.

Inground Irrigation System  Evaluations                                      Top

WaterOne provides free in-ground sprinkler evaluations to customers who are interested in finding out the efficiency of their sprinkler system. These evaluations help customers locate leaks and inefficiencies in their sprinkler systems, and helps them determine ways to maintain a quality landscape with the least amount of water. A customized watering schedule is developed as well, and questions on landscaping and plant care are answered.

The sprinkler evaluation process is WaterOne's way of helping customers evaluate the efficiency of their underground sprinkler system and their outdoor watering practices. The following are just a few of the steps taken:

  1. A trained WaterOne sprinkler evaluator arrives at the customer’s home and explains the purpose and goal of the program. The evaluator answers any questions and is directed by the customer to the irrigation controller.
  2. Next, the evaluator records the number of zones and run times for each, and reviews an "as-built" blueprint of the system, if one is available.
  3. The water meter is located and the square footage of the irrigation area is measured.
  4. The types of plants, the plant material’s density, and the method of irrigation are observed; and the root zone depth is measured to determine the capacity of the soil to hold water.
  5. Next, a visual inspection is made of each zone to identify "misdirected" spray heads, and other problem areas.
  6. In each zone, the gallons-per-minute are measured to help assess the amount of water required for each area.
  7. A report summarizing the results of the evaluation and additional outdoor watering tips are given to the customer. If areas are identified where plants are receiving too much water, a watering schedule, based on KSU recommendations, will also be provided.
