NDMA

N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) has received local media attention recently as an emerging contaminant of concern in drinking water.  NDMA is classified as a probable human carcinogen.  As with any newly discovered contaminant, WaterOne is testing our water to make sure NDMA is not a concern for our customers. If NDMA is found in our water; treatment will be modified to remove it.

As a newly discovered contaminant little is known about NDMA and whether it is prone to form in our water. The mechanism by which NDMA forms in water and the extent to which it forms has not yet been determined.  In order to remain proactive, WaterOne will be testing to see if we can find NDMA in our water.  The samples taken from our distribution system will be sent to one of only six labs currently capable of measuring NDMA.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is following the research on NDMA.  As more information becomes available, they will evaluate the need for possible regulation. More information on NDMA can be found at the following sites:
