Algae affect water quality by causing undesirable tastes and odors or discoloration. Contact with high concentrations of algae can be toxic in humans and pets.

How does WaterOne treat against some types of algae?

The most effective way to treat against algae is by taking a multi-barrier approach.  WaterOne does this by:

• using powdered activated carbon in two places during the treatment process;

• adding Chlorine Dioxide at presedimentation facilities,

• adding Chlorine at the Hansen Treatment Plant;

• sedimentation processes at pre-treatment facilities at the Hansen Treatment Plant; and

• filtration.

WaterOne monitors water quality 24 hours a day every day of the year, and its treatment processes provide a strong barrier to algal toxins, ensuring that its customers’ water is safe for consumption.
