WaterOne General Manager Retires after 48 Years of Service

Byron N. Johnson, General Manager of WaterOne since 1989, has announced his retirement from the utility effective January 3, 2002.  Johnson’s retirement marks the end of a 48-year career with the water utility that began in 1955 while it was still the K. C. Suburban Water Company. 

Throughout his tenure, he has held several management positions including Director of Human Resources; Director of Distribution and Engineering; and Director of Support Services.   The Kansas City, Kansan native earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City while working for the utility. 

Johnson has served on a number of boards and been a member or many professional associations through the years.  He previously was President of the Human Resources Management Association and Director of the Region XIV American Society of Human Resource Management.  He served on the Kansas Water Authority from 1990-1998 by appointment of the President of the Kansas Senate, and served on the Board of Directors of the Kansas River Water Assurance District.
